Universal Studios Japan slashes ticket prices

Price cuts come as response to economy, swine flu
By MARK SCHILLING

TOKYO -- Universal Studios Japan is slashing prices to counter the effects of the recession and swine flu, which have cut attendance drastically. From July 1 to the end of January, visitors will be able to buy the theme park's adult Studio Gold Pass, which is valid for one year except for peak periods, for $131, down $100 from the current price. A similar pass for kids will cost $93, down $76.

USJ's Super Platinum Pass, which entitles the holder to unlimited admissions, will be discounted $97 to $198, while the price of the same pass for kids will be cut $79 to $132.

The number of visitors with the annual pass dropped from 2.7 million for the year ended in March 2008 to 2.6 million for the year ended this past March. Total visitor numbers fell in this period from 8.6 million to 8 million.

(NYSE: LVS) will formally celebrate the completion of the three 55-story hotel towers. When fully completed, the three hotel towers will feature more than 2,500 luxury hotel rooms and suites.

“We are certainly excited to have reached the top floor of the hotel towers

When opened, the sky park will feature three swimming pools, several restaurants and bars, extensive landscaped gardens, and tunning views of the Singapore skyline.

Marina Bay Sands will also feature approximately 1.25 million square feet
(120,000 square metres) of meeting and convention facilities, two world-class

60% of IR will be ready

Casino and theme park to open in first quarter; fewer visitors expected due to tough economy

By Lim Wei Chean

THE Sentosa integrated resort (IR) is all set to throw open its doors in the first quarter of next year - but visitors will not get to see the finished product.

When the resort opens, just 60 per cent of it will be ready: four hotels, the casino, the Universal Studios theme park, the theatre and the retail and dining area.

Construction of the other attractions at the 49ha resort - including the world's largest oceanarium, a marine museum and two more hotels - will begin next year and is slated for completion by 2012.

Giving an update on the progress of the IR yesterday, Resorts World at Sentosa (RWS) executive vice-president of projects Michael Chin said some 80 per cent of construction for the first phase of the resort has been completed.

What remain to be done are exterior works and outfitting the rides for the theme park.

This should be completed by August.

After that, the resort will be testing the rides and other amenities, and getting staff up to speed on operations.

Asked about prices for the rides, the resort's head of communications Krist Boo declined to give details. But she said that charges would be kept 'affordable' and that they would be competitive when compared with other theme parks.

She added that prices would be comparable and likely cheaper, dollar-for-dollar, than those at Universal Studios' other parks in Orlando and Osaka, where day passes go for US$70 (S$100) and 6,000 yen (S$90), respectively.

Ms Boo acknowledged that there are some clouds on the horizon for the IR.

Because of the tough economic times, the resort would have to slash its visitor forecast for the first year from 15 million to 12 million, she said.

Singapore's planned Resorts World at Sentosa expects fewer visitors

Singapore - The developer of the multi-billion dollar Resorts World at Singapore's Sentosa island on Thursday said it will have a soft opening early in 2010, but it has scaled down the expected number of visitors due to the global recession. "We will open early 2010," said executive vice president of projects Michael Chin. "The target is first quarter 2010."The integrated Resorts World at Sentosa, which includes South-East Asia's first Universal Studio theme park, a casino, the Marine Life Park and six hotels with a total of about 1,800 rooms, was originally expected to attract 15 million visitors in its first year of operation. But with the worldwide economic downturn the resort developers now expect 12-13 million visitors in 2010, said spokeswoman Krist Boo. The project, with a total investment of 6.59 billion Singapore dollars (4.32 billion US dollars), is being developed by Genting International, the overseas investment arm of Malaysia's Genting Group, which operates resorts in different parts of the world. Resorts World at Sentosa will become the second casino in the city-state. The first was awarded to Las Vegas Sands for its multi-billion dollar Marina Bay Sands, a triple tower with convention and entertainment facilities in the heart of Singapore's financial district. Marina Bay Sands, costing an estimated 5.5 billion US dollars, is scheduled to open in December. For Resort Worlds at Sentosa, about 60 per cent of the 49-hectare resort will start operation with the soft opening, with the Marine Life Park and some of the hotels opening later, Michael Chin said.

RESORTS WORLD AT SENTOSA ON TRACK TO OPEN IN EARLY 2010

All Structural Buildings to Top Out by July 2009

SINGAPORE, 25 June 2009 – Resorts World at Sentosa today announced that it will complete all structural buildings by July 2009, 27 months after it broke ground in April 2007.

The 49-hectare resort is on track for an early 2010 soft opening, which include Universal Studios Singapore, Resorts World Casino, its resident show theatre, part of its dining strip FestiveWalk and four hotels – Hotel Michael, Maxims Tower, Festive Hotel and Singapore’s very own Hard Rock Hotel.

Fitting out of the hotels’ façade and installation of the Universal Studios Singapore attractions – already begun – will ramp up after the last building Hotel Michael tops out next month. Testing and commissioning of the theme park rides and attractions will take place later this year, as scheduled, for the Resort to meet its early 2010 soft launch target.

About 60 per cent of the Resort’s built up area will open with its soft opening in early 2010. Two more attractions, the Marine Life Park and the Maritime Xperiential Museum, the ESPA and two more hotels – Equarius and Spa Villas – will open progressively.

Mr Michael Chin, Executive Vice President of Projects for Resorts World at Sentosa said: “With the hotels and Universal Studios Singapore attractions such as the world’s tallest dueling coasters Battlestar Galatica and the Waterworld Stunt Show amphitheatre rising from the ground, the anticipation towards our opening in a few months’ time is indeed mounting.”
“Since the award of Resorts World at Sentosa in December 2006, time has been our biggest challenge in building this world-class resort destination. Not only are we on-track to our opening in early 2010, but we will be delivering world-class accommodation, rides, experiences and enjoyment at the same time,” Mr Chin added.

Resorts World at Sentosa – closely watched as the resort destination that will boost Singapore's tourism and MICE numbers in 2010 – houses Southeast Asia’s only Universal Studios theme park, the world’s largest oceanarium, six hotels, a casino and a palette of Las Vegas-styled entertainment, world-class performances, restaurants by celebrity chefs and retail shops.

In fact, forging ahead for an early 2010 opening signifies the 49-hectare Resort’s confidence in its entertainment offerings as a boost for travel into Southeast Asia, as well as Singapore.
On the recruitment front, Resorts World at Sentosa currently has 600 staff on its payroll. Recruitment is being stepped up to fill 10,000 positions when the Resort opens.

IR'S in High Gear to Hire

By Tessa Wong The Straits Time Singapore

EVEN as the Marina Bay hotel tower blocks and Sentosa roller-coaster tracks take shape, the human resources departments of the two integrated resorts have swung into high gear.

The two attractions need a total of 20,000 employees but the number of applications received is several times that.

Marina Bay Sands (MBS) has received 'tens of thousands', and Resorts World at Sentosa (RWS), 'more than 50,000'.

MBS said on Tuesday that so far, it has taken in 200 people in corporate, hotel operations, food and beverage and other areas, and will offer casino positions to over 1,000 workers this week.

The latest hires are all Singaporeans, with eight in 10 between 20 and 40 years old. Nearly two-thirds are men. MBS mounted an aggressive recruitment drive, roping in NTUC's skills-based institute e2i to screen the applications.

Those among the 1,000 who accept the job offer will need to be individually licensed by the Casino Regulatory Authority. After that, they will be put through a three-month in-house training course to turn them into dealers, dealer inspectors and pit supervisors.

About 3,500 casino positions are still available at MBS, including those in areas such as casino finance, player development and surveillance.

Other vacancies in non-gaming departments such as security and hotel operations are also still available.

Suitable candidates will be identified for these positions in the coming weeks and months as the resort builds up its 'pioneer team', said MBS president Nigel Roberts. Construction of the resort is expected to be completed by year's end. Interested parties may apply for the remaining jobs at http://careers.marinabaysands.com.

Recruitment will ramp up in the coming months as the resort is on target to open early next year.

Marina Bay Sands hires 1,000 casino staff

By Tessa Wong

THE first 1,000 casino workers have been hired by Marina Bay Sands, the integrated resort announced on Tuesday.

Letters of intent were sent out this week to successful applicants, who are all Singaporeans. About 80 per cent are between 20 and 40 years old, and nearly two-thirds of them are men.

The hiring comes after an aggressive recruitment drive conducted by the integrated resort, which roped in NTUC's skills-based institute e2i to help screen applicants.

The hired Singaporeans will be dealers, dealer inspectors and pit supervisors. There are still about 3,500 positions available for gaming positions, in areas such as casino finance, player development and surveillance.

Marina Bay Sands said it is still welcoming entries for the rest of the vacancies and interested parties can apply at http://careers.marinabaysands.com.

In total, the integrated resort will need about 9,000 workers to staff not only the casino but its other attractions.

The resort, which is still under construction and is expected to complete by end of this year, will feature a hotel, convention and meeting facilities, a skypark and a museum, besides shopping and dining options.

'In the coming weeks and months, we will identify suitable candidates to fill positions across the property, such as security and hotel operations, in order to enable more Singaporeans to be part of the pioneer team in Marina Bay Sands,' said MBS president Nigel Roberts.

The other integrated resort, Resorts World at Sentosa, has also been aggressively recruiting. It announced the hire of its first casino staff in March.

ADC Systems Provide Multi-Carrier, Indoor/Outdoor Mobile Service to Resorts World at Sentosa in Singapore

ADC (NASDAQ: ADCT) (www.adc.com) today announced that its FlexWave™ Prism distributed antenna systems (DAS) have been selected to provide strong and pervasive mobile coverage for all facilities at Singapore’s Sentosa Island resorts. Deployment will begin immediately and will be completed in time for the resorts’ grand opening in 2010. These products as well as ADC’s entire wireless portfolio will be displayed in Booth 4B1-10 at the CommunicAsia 2009 Exhibition and Conference in Singapore from June 16-19.

The new 49-hectare Resorts World at Sentosa will include six theme hotels, a Universal Studios theme park, the Marine Life Park, the Maritime Experiential Museum, and the Equarius Water Park. The challenge was to provide high-quality mobile voice and data services to all parts of the island’s resort and inside its buildings.

This project marks the first-ever collaboration with NCS, a leading IT and communications engineering service provider in the Asia-Pacific region. NCS and ADC will design, supply, build and integrate the solution for Resorts World at Sentosa. The solution delivers multi-carrier coverage with a single set of compact radio units that are connected via ADC’s patented digital fiber optic technology to mobile telcos’ base station hotels.

The mobile network at Resorts World is a shared infrastructure for MobileOne, StarHub, SingTel Mobile and GRID Communications. This project is being primed by MobileOne on behalf of the other three Singapore mobile telcos. ADC’s solution includes 46 FlexWave Prism remote units, which will each support four different mobile frequencies (iDEN, GSM, DCS, and UMTS), ensuring high-quality voice and data services for resort staff and guests. The FlexWave Prism remote units will link to two base station hotels on the resort that will provide the signal sources for the carriers involved in the project. Unlike other outdoor solutions, Prism saves space, is quick to deploy, and blends into the environment. “Our FlexWave Prism solution was designed precisely for such applications as the expansive, new resort facilities on Sentosa because it supports multiple carriers over a large area – both indoor and outdoor – with a relatively small investment in equipment and deployment services” said Derek Paton, director of Asia-Pacific sales for ADC. “As carriers migrate more of their networks to provide 3G and 4G services worldwide, we believe that precision coverage systems like FlexWave Prism will be an important part of the solution.”

About ADC Network Solutions

TCS John Huxley opens Singapore office

TCS John Huxley has established a new facility in Singapore to provide service and support for the region's growing gaming industry.

Earlier this year, Tristan Sjoberg, managing director for Asia, relocated to Singapore to set up the new hub for the region, which aims to serve the large-scale projects now under way in Singapore, as well as other existing casinos in Malaysia, Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia, Korea and also India and Nepal.

The new office combines sales, technical support and service, as well as incorporating a fully equipped showroom that will display the latest TCS John Huxley product offerings.

“There’s a reason why 3,000 companies have their regional headquarters in Singapore,” said Sjoberg. “It’s a very good business environment to base yourself from and has a large talent pool of technical and administrative staff. In addition, two of the largest Asian projects are currently under way here – Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World Sentosa – both due for completion in the next 12 months.

“The extraordinary growth experienced in Macau has without doubt encouraged other Asian countries to legalise gaming. But now the focus has shifted to Singapore and everyone is waiting to see how these mega integrated resorts will change gaming in this region."

Switch out of Resorts into Genting: TA

MALAYSIAN brokerage TA Securities continues to recommend investors to switch out of Resorts into Genting to capitalise on the latter’s potential re-rating ahead of the opening of Resorts World at Sentosa.

It was reported over the weekend that Fitch Ratings has lowered its outlook on Genting’s issuer default rating to negative from stable and reaffirmed the rating at -A.

"The economic factor is bound to have an impact on visitors arrival but it is adequately reflected in our earnings forecasts," says TA.

TA has a "buy" call on Genting with a target price of RM6.60. - Reuters

Gear up for hospitality boom

Ms Billie Ooi (left) and Mr Richmond Kok graduated yesterday after pursuing their studies at the University of Nevada Las Vegas' campus here. -- ST PHOTO: ASHLEIGH SIM

By Debbie Yong
The Sunday Times today

From doing backend business strategising in a nine-to-five IT job, Mr Christopher Goh now stands on his feet all day greeting guests as a management trainee at the Royal Plaza on Scotts hotel.

But the 41-year-old, who has been working there for a month as part of his master's degree course, does not mind.

'In the hospitality line, I get to meet people from all over the world and it's a fast-growing industry,' he said.

Mr Goh is one of the first three people selected for the Workforce Development Agency's Professional Conversion Programme for Hospitality Managers.

The $3 million freshly launched programme is specially tailored to help professionals and managers from non-hospitality-related industries switch to new career pathways in the hospitality sector.

Those selected for the programme will receive an academic scholarship grant of $45,000 to pursue a Master of Hospitality Administration degree at the University of Nevada Las Vegas' (UNLV) Singapore campus on the 10th and 11th floors of the National Library Building in Bugis.

They will also receive a training stipend of $30,000 and have to intern at major hospitality establishments as part of the 15-month full-time programme.

Applications for the next intake in August close on June 19.

The scholarships were given out yesterday by Minister of State for Trade and Industry Lee Yi Shyan at the graduation ceremony of the UNLV's inaugural batch of 36 master's and undergraduate students.

Citing the opening of the two integrated resorts, Marina Bay Sands and Resorts World at Sentosa, and upcoming events in Singapore such as the Formula One night race, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum and next year's Youth Olympic Games, Mr Lee said Singapore will need 'the right people with the right skills and a high level of service standards'.

Universal Studios S'pore will be one of world's best

by Chen Jingting

MISTER Stefan Zwanzger has one of the most enviable pastimes in the world.

The German travels around the globe rating theme parks in different countries.

Calling himself "The Theme Park Guy", Mr Zwanzger was here recently to visit Universal Studios Singapore, which is still under construction on Sentosa and due to open next year.

How does it rate? He gave it full marks for being the "most amazing theme-park construction area for the time being".

Since October 2007, Mr Zwanzger has rated about 60 theme parks in North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia.

He told my paper in a phone interview from the Philippines: "I think Singapore will have one of the best theme parks in the world next year. Universal Studios Singapore will be absolutely incredible and it will create a lot of theme-park addicts here."

For the 29-year-old, who had dreamt of having his own theme park since he was 10, visiting a theme park is like going to the movies.

He said that technological advancements have made it possible for rides to have "storytelling abilities".

"Now, rides do not just go up and down, left and right. Rides have climaxes - they can start and stop and accelerate again. There are so many possibilities nowadays."

His favourite parks so far are Universal Studios Japan and Disney Sea Japan because of their high-tech rides and well-designed layout.

Mr Zwanzger paid for his trips using what he earned from heading an affiliate marketing company for eight years before he embarked on "The Theme Park Guy" project, which he started because he was "absolutely passionate" about theme parks.

"Theme parks are like little villages of happiness. No cars, no traffic, no rush hours, no pickpockets - a big pedestrian zone, where everyone smiles and the whole diversity of human emotions is present."

The theme-park enthusiast would post his ratings and photographs of places he visited on his website. He has not received any complaint about his ratings, though he expects some to disagree with his reviews.

When asked what he thought makes him qualified to rate theme parks, Mr Zwanzger answered simply: "I love them.

"I don't see myself as a reviewer. A reviewer is someone who's very critical. I'm just a big fan who dares to tell people exactly what he thinks."
